2022 World Cup Qualifier: Olembe stadium to host Cameroon vs Malawi

Media reports in Cameroon suggest the news of the controversial Olembe sports complex in Yaounde to finally be ready and host Cameroon's first FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifier game against Malawi.

The sports edifice which has been at the center of some construction controversies in Cameroon for some years now is looking set to host the game come September 2.

The said stadium was suppose to be ready by December of 2018 as it was earmarked to host matches of the 2019 AFCON competition in Cameroon. Its uncompleted state among other delays prompted CAF to strip-off the country's hosting rights as a result.

The 60.000 capacity stadium over the years has seen changes in the construction company and on several counts workers have gone on strike for months with work halted on the site.

Information seeping from the Sports ministry say the game against Malawi will inaugurate the stadium which will also host matches in the 2021 AFCON to be played in Cameroon come January 2022.

Cameroon's World Cup qualifiers could have been made less tedious as per the group placements. The Lions are in group D with Ivory Coast , Mozambique and Malawi. The last two teams have never qualified for a World Cup competition prior.

Ivory Coast represented the continent in 2006 and 2010 and 2014 editions while Cameroon is among the most represented African nations at the world stage with 7 appearances.

The indomitable Lions also will want to keep a personal record of no defeat at home for the last 40 years.
