AFCON 2021 - Nigeria: Towards a clash between Osimhen and Napoli

Victor Osimhen has not yet fully recovered from his facial injury sustained in November and is set to play for Nigeria at the 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon. The 22-year-old's decision has not gone down well with his club Napoli.

There's a buzz in the air between Napoli and their Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen. According to several Italian media outlets, the player's decision to rejoin his national team for the 2021 African Cup of Nations while he is still recovering from a facial injury has not gone down well with Napoli's management. The Italian tabloids are questioning whether the 22-year-old has obtained permission from his club to stop his recovery process.

Having returned to individual training in early December, Osimhen was recently photographed in a session with a teammate. However, he has not yet received medical clearance to participate in team training with his club. A specially designed face mask has been provided to the Super Eagles striker to facilitate his future return to the squad.

The former Lille striker underwent surgery in November and was expected to make his return in February, according to his doctors. That is, after the 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon. But the Super Eagle made himself available for his selection almost two months before the announced date of his return. He was then included in the list of 28 Nigerian players called up for the competition.

Victor Osimhen, Nigeria's top scorer in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, is also keen to make his mark on the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
