South Africa has won the Women's AFCON for the first time in its history. And the South African Football Federation was keen to reward the Banyana Banyana for their performance. Each player received 24,000 euros.
"We have honored the commitment made by the president of SAFA Danny Jordaan to pay the players 24,000 euros that were promised to them. The 23 players were paid on Friday. We made the payment with a big smile, and we are happy to say, we have honored the promise," said SAFA's financial director Gift Sekonde. The Minister of Sports will also pay 350,000 euros to Banyana Banyana for their title.
SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan said the agreed deadline for payment with the players was within 30 days after the triumph and the Association has kept its commitment. “The payment was supposed to be done within 30 days of them winning the title and SAFA has undertaken and fulfilled that commitment,’’ said Dr Jordaan at a Press Conference at SAFA House on Friday (12 August 2022).
A deserved run for the South Africans who had earlier signaled their ambitions by winning the Aisha Buhari Cup beating the Super Falcons of Nigeria 3-1 in the finals last year. The South Africans continued their fine form in June after winning every game they played as well as out playing the host Morocco in the finals.
