Ghana is in the same group as Uruguay for the 2022 World Cup. A match that brings back memories to Asamoah Gyan, who missed a penalty in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup against Uruguay. The striker also wants to play in this World Cup come November.
When it comes to Ghana and the World Cup, the name Asamoah Gyan is never far away. The striker had made a whole people dream, and even a whole continent during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He had carried the Black Stars to the quarterfinals. Moreover, he accumulated six goals in three editions (2006-2010-2014). Qualified for Qatar 2022, Ghana has convinced many dual nationals to join the ranks. And they could well be joined by the former Rennes.
Asamoah Gyan indeed dreams of this World Cup 2022. This while he has not played a minute at club level since April 2021 and a match with Legon Cities, a team based in Accra. His last cap for the national team was in July 2019. Yet the man with 107 caps (51 goals) is adamant that he wants to be part of this adventure. "The World Cup is the dream of every footballer. I think I still have some energy left to prove myself once again," said the 36-year-old striker in comments relayed by BBC Sport Africa.
Following the example of Roger Milla
At the start of the 2022 World Cup, Asamoah Gyan will be 37 years old. And although this may cool the ardor of some, the Ghanaian sites him an inspiration. Since before him, a Cameroonian legend, Roger Milla, had shown all his talent at the 1994 World Cup, when he was 42 years old. Gyan wants to follow in his footsteps.
