No Napoli's Osimhen in Nigeria squad for friendly with Algeria

Osimhen blow for Nigeria

Nigeria will face off with Algeria in an international friendly, without Napoli star Victor Osimhen.

The African nations are meeting in build up to Afcon 2023 qualifiers after both failed to make it back to the global stage in the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup this November following their campaigns in Russia four years ago.

In his place, Jose Peseiro has named Cyriel Dessers to fill the void left by the Italy-based forward in the Nigeria attack as well as Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho taking Real Sociedad's Umar Sadiq's spot.

The Super Falcons handler will be without Osimhen and Sadiq due to injuries picked up while on duty for Napoli and Real Sociedad respectively. The former could return to competition action in a number of weeks but the latter might have seen his season come to an unfortunate end even before it started in the Spanish topflight.

Shock omissions include Joe Aribo, who is enjoying fine form with Southampton. While the usual suspects listed includes Calvin Bassey, who has been in fine form with Dutch champions, Ajax alongside Leciester City's Wilfred Ndidi, Villarreal's Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman, William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa.

Meanwhile, SportNewsAfrica understands ex-Rangers centre-back Leon Balogun, who recently joined Championship side QPR, has pulled of the squad following a knock picked up in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Stoke. He has been replaced Sochaux defender Valentine Ozornwafor.

Algeria will host the West Africa nation at Olympique Stadium in Oran on September 23 as the technical bench of both teams try new technical approaches ahead of future competitive matches.

Nigeria's next competitive matches will be in 2023 when the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers resume, with the Super Eagles are in Group A alongside Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone and Sao Tome & Principe.
