Bayelsa Queens pip Simba Queens to win first Women's Champions League medal

Bayelsa Queens deliver bronze

Bayelsa Queens defeated Tanzanian champions Simba Queens 1-0 in the third place match of the CAF Women's Champions League at Stade Moulay Hassan on Saturday.

The triumph saw the Nigerians claim the bronze medal and became the first Nigeria club to win a CAF Interclub medal.

The Nigerian champions missed the chance to celebrate the title, having bowed 1-0 to hosts ASFAR earlier on Wednesday, however they have now managed to win a medal to salvage their disappointing debut campaign.

Bayelsa were asking all the questions in most period of the first half of the match but could not find a breakthrough as both sides failed in multiple attempts to break the deadlock.

However, Mercy Itimi's fine cross from the right was blasted home by Juliet Sunday in the 70th minute of the match which turned out the eventual matchwinner to secure a bronze medal for Bayelsa Queens.

The result means Bayelsa Queens have now entered into the history books of the competition as they become the first Nigerian club to win a medal in a CAF women's Interclub championship. They also ended the tournament, winning three out of their five matches, with defeats coming from the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns and ASFAR.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Bawou Gabrielle won her second Woman of the Match accolade in the tournament following her brilliant goalkeeping to ensure Bayelsa Queens celebrate the bronze on the maiden appearance.

Despite their third place victory, Bayelsa Queens will wait until after the final of the 2022 CAF Champions League between defending Champions Mamelodi Sundowns locking horns with ASFAR Club at Moulay Abdellah to hit the podium for their bronze medals on Sunday night.
