2022 FIFA World Cup: Uruguay sees off Ghana in supposed 'revenge mission' tie

Ghana eliminated from Qatar 2022 World Cup

Ghana's 2022 FIFA World Cup journey has come to an end after losing to Uruguay by 2goals at the Al Janoub sports stadium on Friday afternoon.

In what was termed as a revenge mission for the Black Stars, they  failed to take their chances as they've been taken out of the tourney for the second time, having lost to the South American side on penalties in 2010.

Coach Otto Addo made few changes to the side that defeated South Korea in their second group game, bringing in Alidu Seidu and Baba Rahman for Gideon Mensah and Tariq Lamptey.

The West African side had the chance to go up front in the 21st minutes when Mohammed Kudus was brought down in the penalty box.
Skipper of the side, Andre Ayew was denied by Uruguayan shot-stopper with his left footed spotkick being saved.

Uruguay capitalised on Ghana's penalty miss to pile more pressure which resulted in a goal in the minutes courtesy De Arrascaeta.
Luiz Suarez's was denied by Lawrence Ati Zigi but De Arrascaeta was there to head home to put Diego Alonso's side ahead.

De Arrascaeta doubled Uruguay's lead in the 32nd minute, feeding on Luiz Suarez's pass to put a shot past Ghana's goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi.
Otto Addo's men in quest to redeem their images had several attempts on goal but all  proved futile with the first half ending in 2-0 victory for the South Americans.

Back from recess Otto Addo made two quick changes with the introduction of Osman Bukari and Kamaldeen Sulemana for the Ayew brothers, Andre and Jordan.

Uruguayan shot-stopper Sergio Rochet was the saviour of the day, denying Mohammed Kudus on multiple occasions on what could have resulted in goals for the Ajax midfielder.

Daniel Kofi Kyere, Antoine Semenyo and Abdul Fataw Ishahaku were later brought on to help salvage a point for the former African champions but failed to penetrate the Uruguayan defence.

The result meant that both sides will bow out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup as South Korea came second after beating Portugal in the dying embers of the game.
