South Africa - PSL: Pirates splash big on Cameroonian striker

In a bid to regain prominence in South Africa's top flight, Soweto giants Orlando Pirates have secured the services of Cameroon's finest home grown talent in striker, Marou Souabou, reports say.

Having been announced as a target for several clubs in Europe, Cotonsport's Marou Souaibou has opted for South Africa.

It’s not surprising that Souaibou is in high demand considering that the talented forward is said to have scored 21 goals in all competitions last season on the way to claiming the 2022 Footballer of the Season in Cameroon.

The striker is therefore set to discover the ABSA Premiership, which is equivalent to the South African first-tier championship under the stewardship of coach Jose Riveiro.

Cotonsport will receive 124,000 million FCFA, in exchange for Pirates to get their man, plus, a resale commission of 15%. The duration of the contract is set for four years.

Marou Souaibou will join fellow countryman - Eva Ngah, and a strong community of Cameroonian players in South Africa, like Ambina of Cape Town City FC and keepers Anye Fru of Maritzburg and Hugo Nyame of Royal AM.

Aged 22, Souaibou has played for different Cameroonian categories such as the U23s, CHAN selection, and most recently, the national team.

The lad was one of 26 players called up by Rigobert Song to take part in this year's World Cup, on the back of his ballon D'or win. He also helped Coton sport break a five year spell into the group stage of this season's CAF Champions League.

Interestingly, should this deal still indeed be confirmed by Pirates, Souaibou’s arrival would necessitate the departure of at least one overseas-based player as Bucs already have a full quota of five foreigners in Richard Ofori, Kwame Peprah, Olisah Ndah, Terrence Dzuvukamnanja and of course Bienvenu Eva-Nga, who is also from Cameroon.
