Chris Hughton unveiled as new Black Stars coach, set sights on first assignment against Angola

Ghana FA officially unveiled Chris Hughton as new head coach

The Ghana Football Association has finally unveiled Chris Hughton as the new head coach  of the Black Stars in a short ceremony held at the SG Mall in Kumasi.

The former Newcastle United manager was handed a two year deal which runs until December 2024.

Speaking at the unveiling, Chris said he is ready and proud to be given the mandate to lead the Black Stars.

To represent Ghana and the Black Stars as the head coach is something I am incredibly proud of. It’s something I’ll give everything to make the team as successful as possible. I’ll give everything to make sure the communication and relationship I have with this association and the supporters goes as planned for the betterment of the Black Stars.

Our game is about support – from the association, but mostly, the support from the huge array of fans we have, and that starts with a very difficult game at Kumasi on Thursday,” Hughton told the media at his unveiling.

On expectations from Ghanaian football fans, the newly appointed coach revealed that he can't assure Ghana of a trophy but he can assure them of a better and strong team that can compete at any level.

No coach can sit here and guarantee a trophy but what I can guarantee is a strong team”.

He further added that he will be spending much of his time in Ghana to monitor the Ghana premier league.

"I will be spending more time in Ghana & be watching more games. I’m constantly being made aware of players who are doing well. I'll be paying more attention to the local league because it is important that we have a strong local league."

Hughton’s first assignment with Ghana will be in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations against Angola on March 23 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and later in Luanda for the second leg.
