Rivers United book CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal spot after Diables Noirs draw

Rivers United seal knockout stage spot

Rivers United of Port Harcourt sailed through to the quarter-finals of the 2022/2023 CAF Confederation Cup despite a 2-2 home draw with Diables Noirs of Congo Brazzaville on Sunday.

The Nigeria Premier Football League title-holders were stunned late by their Congolese visitors in their fifth group stage fixture at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The Pride of Rivers made a false start to the contest as Emmanuel Ampiah put the ball in his own net in the ninth minute to give Diables Noirs the first half lead.

After the restart, Stanley Eguma's men continued their fightback and eventually found a breakthrough through Nwangwa Nyima in the 73rd minute before putting the hosts in from with his second of the match four minutes later.

With the hosts holding to a slim lead, Diables Noirs, however, left it late to level and guarantee a point through Deo Bassinga nine minutes from time.

The result took Rivers to 10 points and keeps them on top of the group on goals difference, ahead of second-placed ASEC Mimosas who have the same number of points following a 2-1 win at Motema Pembe 2-1.

With Rivers and ASEC sealing their quarterfinal berths, both teams will seek to wrestle for the group leadership to April 2 when they face off on the final match day in Ivory Coast, with the Nigerian side needing only a draw.
