The legal battle surrounding the 2023 Ghana Football Association (GFA) Elections has taken another twist as the hearing for the injunction application brought by King Faisal Football Club has been adjourned once more.
The new court hearing date has been rescheduled to Tuesday, September 19th, following a virtual court session held on Wednesday, September 6th. Both parties' legal representatives have collectively agreed to reconvene in approximately two weeks to address the ongoing concerns.
The election process, after the completion of candidate vetting, remains in a precarious state of suspension, as King Faisal continues to challenge the GFA's scheduled presidential election set for September 27th in Tamale.
The incumbent GFA President, Kurt Okraku, faces a formidable challenge from George Afriyie, the former Vice President of the association, in a bid for the top position.
King Faisal Football Club's stance is clear: they are advocating for a temporary halt to the Presidential elections until elections for representatives of the National League clubs, Regional Football Associations, and other affiliated groups are successfully concluded.
Their legal pursuits also include a demand for a declaration that a proper Congress cannot convene to elect the President until new representatives for the Executive Council (Exco) are duly elected.
Furthermore, they assert that electing a new GFA President prior to the selection of Exco representatives would not align with the law.
In addition to these claims, the club contends that any decision made by the current Exco members regarding the GFA President's election before the appointment of Exco representatives should be perceived as a breach of trust, confidence, and loyalty.
Bankroller and owner for King Faisal Football Club, Alhaji Grusah, who is also a former management Committee member for Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars in an interview affirmed his club’s position saying, “ The injunction is to steer the GFA back on the right track. The Association isn’t anyone’s personal property. Whether the injunction delays the electoral process or not, I do not care; the right procedures should be undertaken.”
The GFA Elections continue to be marred by legal complexities, leaving the football community eagerly awaiting the resolution of this contentious matter on September 19th.
