AFCON 2023: Chris Hughton disappointed surprised and bitter

After a completely unsuccessful 2021 edition, Ghana arrived in Côte d'Ivoire with the firm intention of redeeming themselves. But the Black Stars' adventure got off to a very poor start. They lost their first match on Sunday to Cape Verde (1-2). Dominated throughout the match, they managed to pull level in the 58th minute after conceding the first goal in the 17th minute. But Gary Rodrigues crucified them in added time, handing the Blue Sharks victory. A huge disappointment for Ghana's Irish coach. "We had an offensive strategy, but we were surprised. It's a bitter defeat for the expectations of the Ghanaian public," reacted Chris Hughton. He and his players already have their backs against the wall before facing Egypt on Thursday at 8pm. Ghana are bottom of Pool B behind Cape Verde (3 pts), Mozambique (1 pt) and Egypt (1 pt).
