The Nigerian Football Association must act fast or risk missing out on promising Werder Bremen striker Justin Njinmah. The 23-year-old nugget is also being tracked by the German Football Association.
According to German newspaper Bild, Justin Njinmah (23) is on the radar of the German Football Association (DFB). The promising centre-forward is currently enjoying an acceptable season with Bremen (5 goals, 2 assists). "We've noticed that Justin Njinmah has progressed very well. The player is in our sights," Andreas Rettig, Managing Director of the German Football Association, told Sport-Bild. According to the same report, however, it is unlikely that Njinmah will be called up for next March's international matches against France and the Netherlands.
Nevertheless, his performances this season have aroused the interest of the DFB, who will try to convince him to represent Germany at the expense of Nigeria. The Nigerian Football Association has also held talks with the Bremen striker.The problem for Njinmah, however, is that both nations have several attacking options. Nigeria have Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Kelechi Iheanacho, Paul Onuachu, Terem Moffi and Moses Simon. In Germany, the 23-year-old is not the type of striker the Mannschaft need at the moment.
Following in the footsteps of Balogun, Owomoyela or Sam
Although born in Hamburg (November 15, 2000), Njinmah is still eligible for the Super Eagles. One of his parents is from Nigeria. The player faces the same dilemma as Patrick Owomoyela, Dennis Aogo and Sidney Sam. The above-mentioned retired players could have represented the Super Eagles at international level, but chose Germany, their country of birth. On the other hand, other footballers such as Leon Balogun, Kevin Akpoguma and Jordan Torunarigha decided to wear the Nigerian jersey.
