Leverkusen: Boniface, Adli, Kosssounou, Tella, Tapsoba German champions

Bayer Leverkusen had the chance to clinch the first German championship in their history with victory over Werder Bremen. They won 5-0 at home. The club long derided for its inability to win a national title has now shed its Neverkusen moniker. In a symbolic move, Nigerian striker Victor Boniface, making his first start since recovering from injury in December, got his team-mates off to a flying start from the penalty spot in the 25th minute. Granit Xhaka then doubled the lead (60th). Florian Wirtz made it 3-0 (63rd). Wirtz scored 2 more goals (83rd, 90th) to round off the scoring.

With this victory (79 pts), the team now has a 16-point lead over Bayern Munich, a measure of the magnitude of the feat achieved by Xabi Alonso's men.

Leverkusen's title triumph, with only 5 games remaining in the German top flight, also reflects the presence of several African players in the squad: Moroccan Amine Adli, Burkinabe Edmond Tapsoba, Ivorian Odilon Kossonou and Nigerians Boniface and Nathan Tella, who all started the game against Bremen.

Bayer's current season is exceptional and could well be historic. The team won the championship. They will contest the Cup final against Kaiserslautern on May 25. The team is also still in the running for the Europa League. The team, also in the quarter-finals of the C3, has taken an option for qualification for the semi-finals, following its victory at home against West Ham (2-0) in the first leg.

They are also unbeaten so far this season. A fine champion!
