AFCON 2025: Hugo Broos takes on refereeing in Egypt - South Africa game

Beaten on Friday by Egypt (1-0) in the second day of the group stage of the AFCON, South Africa missed an opportunity to validate their qualification for the last 16. But at the end of the game, anger motivated the South Africans more than disappointment with the result. Staff and players did not fail to point a finger at the referee of the game and some of his decisions, including a penalty awarded to Salah, before refusing them one at the end of the game. Something to piss off Hugo Broos.

In a press conference, the Bafana coach let go on the refereeing, confessing notably about the whistled penalty against his team:

"Salah even came to see me after the match and was surprised that they had whistled a penalty."

The Belgian technician also returned to the intervention of the VAR at the end of the match and the decision of the referee to finally grant neither a penalty nor a free kick to his team.

“The referees spend 45 minutes explaining the rules when it comes to a red card or a penalty. But afterwards, there are so many interpretations that no one knows what to decide anymore. During this meeting, they said that if an arm is extended, it’s a penalty. Which was the case in this specific case. Then, all of a sudden, they say it was a supporting arm. Who invented that?

For their last match in group B, South Africa will face Zimbabwe.
