Women’s AFCON 2026: Morocco gives up, South Africa takes over the organization

While in the wake of the men’s competition, Morocco was also supposed to host the Women’s AFCON which is due to start on March 17, a shocking announcement was made this Sunday by Peace Mabe on the sidelines of the Hollywoodbets Super League Awards in South Africa. The South African Deputy Minister of Sports present on stage announced that it is her country that will finally host this 2026 edition.
«South Africa will host the 2026 Women’s AFCON, which as you know is a qualifier for the 2027 Women’s World Cup», announced-telle, before developing later: "We seized the opportunity, because we think that we have the necessary infrastructures (...) When Morocco said 'we are not available to organize the competition', we only have us, we are."
A fallback solution that appears as a lifeline for CAF, which would find itself without an organizing country less than 2 months before the competition.
