Qatar-bound Portugal expose Super Eagles weaknesses with Lisbon thrashing

Super Eagles crash in Lisbon

Portugal trounced Nigeria 4-0 in an international friendly in Lisbon on Thursday night to wrap up their preparations for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The encounter which marked the first-ever senior international clash between both nations, saw the three-time African champions crumbling at the feat of the the 2016 European champions.

The early breakthrough came for the Portuguese when Diogo Dalot and Joao Felix ran rings round the Eagles' defense and set up Bruno Fernandes for the first goal nine minutes into the encounter.

After the Super Eagles held on for a little while, Fernandes profitted from a defensive mixup when right back Bright Osayi-Samuel handled the ball inside Nigeria area in effort to clear Felix's effort to gift the hosts a penalty which the Manchester United man converted to increase the tally in the 33 rd minute.

In the closing stages of the first half, the Nigerians came close to finding a response but could not through begging chances from Ademola Lookman, Terem Moffi as well as Moses Simon, with goalkeeper Rui Patricio at his best.

After the restart, coach Jose Peseiro made few changes to his starting XI, bringing in Samuel Chukwueze, Frank Onyeka and Paul Onuachu in place of Wilfred Ndidi, Lookman and Moffi but no breakthroughs were found.

However, the West Africans' push for a comeback eventually paid off as they won a penalty in the 80 th minute when debutant Osayi-Samuel was tripped in the Portuguese box, but Emmanuel Dennis missed from the spot.

With the visitors' failed attempt from the spot, the Portuguese side mounted late pressure, and soon added two more goals in the 82 nd  and 84 th minute through Goncalo Ramos and Joao Mario to seal their first ever triumph.

The defeat for Nigeria means Peseiro's disappointing run continues, suffering a fourth defeat despite winning both of his matches in AFCON qualifying for 2023 since taking over as Super Eagles coach.
