2012 Gold medalist Kiprotich to captain Team Uganda at Tokyo Olympics

Team Uganda will be captained by experienced athlete Stephen Kiprotich at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The 2012 London Olympics gold medalist (marathon) received the national flag from Ugandan president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni during an official flag-off ceremony held at the Kololo Independence Grounds on Friday.

Halimah Nakaayi, another field and track athlete will be the women’s captain. Uganda’s team will have 12 male athletes and 13 female participating in track and field events, boxing, Rowing and Swimming.

President Museveni together with the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni also flagged off the Uganda team for the Paralympic Games.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were postponed last year because of the Coronavirus pandemic. This year it will be staged from July 23rd to August 8th.

“I congratulate all of your for qualifying for the event. Do not waste your chance now with indiscipline so preserve your self and take care of your self while at the Games,” said Museveni.

“You need to be careful of Coronavirus this time round because it has proved to be a big issue. Do not mix with anybody while in Japan. Yes you are fully vaccinated but you can still catch the disease,” added the President.

Hamsom Obua, the State Minister for Sports thanked President Museveni and the government of Uganda for all the support towards sports.

Uganda first participated at the Olympic Games in 1956. Uganda has won seven medals at the Olympic Games since then with all coming from athletics and boxing.
