AFCON U23 Qualifiers: Uganda backs out of tournament

Financial challenges force Uganda to withdraw from U-23 AFCON qualifiers

Uganda has withdrawn their national U-23 team, Uganda Kobs from the TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Moses Hassim Magogo, President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has disclosed that they have decided to withdraw because of financial challenges.

“FUFA Executive Committee took a painful decision to withdraw the U-23 team from the AFCON qualifiers where we were supposed to play against Guinea due to financial constraints,” confirmed the FUFA President.

The Uganda Kobs were scheduled to face Guinea in the second round of qualifiers on October 22 for the first leg at Chamazi Stadium in Tanzania.

The match was expected to take place in Tanzania because Guinea do not have a stadium approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Magogo explained that since the government has not yet released money to the Federation this year, they are struggling financially because they have entered several teams and yet they also have several programmes to run,” added the Federation President.

The U-23 AFCON qualifier which will have the final played in Egypt next year is also an Olympic qualifier.

The best three teams at the AFCON in Egypt will qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics to take place in Paris, France.
