Athletics - World U20 Championships: Africans' raid after two days

Africa is collecting medals at the World U20 Athletics Championships currently taking place in Nairobi, Kenya. After two days of competition, the African athletes have 14 medals, including 6 gold.

Two radiant days for Africa in Nairobi. As on the first day, Africa's future track stars won several medals on Thursday 19 August. This second day started with two 100% African podiums in the 3000m (women) and 5000m (men). Then the Namibian Beatrice Masilingi won silver in the women's 100m.

The 18-year-old Namibian finished behind Jamaican Tina Clayton. Not since Nigeria's Joan Uduak Ekah had an African woman stood on the podium in the women's 100m at the U20 World Championships. In the final event on Thursday, Botswana's Letsile Tebogo took the gold medal in the men's 100m. This is the first African title in this event since Nigeria's Francis Obikwelu in 1996. The latter will later take Portuguese nationality.

After two days of competition, 30 medals were distributed. Africa took almost half with 14 medals: 6 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze. Kenya leads the ranking of the best nations with 4 awards, including two titles. Three years ago at the 17th edition held in Tampere, Finland, only 4 African countries were able to register their name on the list of winners: Kenya (11 medals), Ethiopia (9 medals), South Africa (4 medals) and Uganda (2 medals). In Nairobi, there are already 7 African medalists: Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Nigeria, Botswana, Namibia, Eritrea.
