If the Cameroonian Njoya Ajara Nchout did not succeed in imposing herself at Atletico, her replacement, the South African Thembi Kgatlana, is doing rather well. After a complicated start, she scored her second consecutive goal in the league last weekend.
Njoya Ajara Nchout arrived in Spain at Atletico Madrid in January after a successful spell in Norway, where she strung together goals like pearls. The Cameroonian striker was expected to help the Colchoneros take a step forward and challenge Oshoala's Barcelona. Unfortunately, the 27-year-old never adapted to the Spanish game and spent only half a season (2 goals) before joining Inter Milan this summer. To replace her, Madrid's directors have turned to Eibar. Thembi Kgatlana from South Africa was recruited. The 25-year-old was coming off a successful first season in Spain, scoring 10 league goals. However, she has had a difficult start to the season.
Thembi Kgatlana finally wakes up
It took eight games before Thembi Kgatlana found the net. Thembi Kgatlana's first goal of the season came against Villarreal (3-0), but she then followed up with a 1-1 draw with Atletico at the weekend in the closing round of the Women's Superliga. The Madrid side thus remain on the third step of the podium with 18 points, three points behind Real Sociedad (2nd).
Thembi Kgatlana and her team-mates are already nine points behind Barça, who won for the ninth time in as many games against Eibar (3-0). Nigeria's Asisat Oshoala found the net again. She now has 11 goals. She is the league's top scorer ahead of Madrid's Brazilian Geyse (9 goals). Oshoala is well on her way to surpassing her goal tally in 2019-2020 (20 goals) and 2020-2021 (18 goals).
