Nigeria star Asisat Oshoala found the net on her 27th birthday as Barcelona hammered South Africa international Thembi Kgatlana's Atletico Madrid 3-0 in Saturday's Spanish Primera Iberdrola encounter.
Kgatlana came off the bench in the 74th minute, with her side already three goals down in Madrid but her effort was not enough to help them avoid their first defeat of the season at the hands of Oshoala and the Spanish champions.
Against Atletico, Oshoala was handed her fourth Spanish elite division start of the 2021-22 campaign, partnering Mariona Caldentey and Caroline Gragam Hansen in a 4-3-3 formation.
Prior to the contest, the African Women's Footballer of the Year winners had previously met five times, with Oshoala winning thrice and scoring three times, while Kgatlana celebrated victories twice and netted twice.
Oshoala opened the scoring for the Catalans with her eighth league goal of the campaign in six matches thanks to a superb pass from the right from Hansen in the 35th minute to offer the visitors a first half advantage.
Two week ago, the Super Falcons captain fired black at the Aisha Buhari Cup as Kgatlana scored to inspire Banyana Banyana cruised to a 4-2 victory over nine-time African champions in the closing match of the competition.
Following 64th minute substitution of Oshoala, Aitana Bonmati doubled the lead in the 71st minute before Lieke Martens notched the third three minutes later to complete the clinical triumph.
With her fine form, Oshoala's goal is a warning signal to Ghana ahead of this month's double-header 2022 African Women's Cup of Nations qualifiers. Before then, she will travel to Denmark to face Koge in the Uefa Women's Champions League and later Sporting Huelva in their last domestic encounter before the international break.
On the other hand, Kgatlana saw the last 14 minutes of the contest on her fifth appearance as a substitute will continue the search for her first goal for Atletico since joining from Eibar this term. Her Nigerian teammate Rasheedat Ajibade, was not dressed for the capital club in the encounter.
