Cameroon: Rigobert Song calls up 25 local players for a training camp

Rigobert Song wants to give local players a chance. The Cameroon coach has called up 25 local players for a training camp from 23 to 27 May. The best players will be selected for the preparations of the AFCON 2023 qualifiers. In this group we find notably the nugget of Coton Sport Garoua Wassou Goue. The latter was selected during the playoffs of the World Cup 2022 against Algeria.

The initiative on a general scale is encouraged but still the criteria of selection has come under questioning. Ebassa Emmanuel is a player from Tonerre de Yaounde and features on the list. His side has been struggling throughout the championship as they have just 6 points in 12 league matches are are 12th on a 13 team standings in Pool B.

Another case study is Mfe Nanaga Romeo of Nyabewa Academy who is not playing in any of the Elite levels yet features on the list.

The best players of this training course could even be selected for the training course for the qualifications of the AFCON 2023. The Indomitable Lions will face Kenya on June 4 in the first day of these qualifiers. These are arguably the best players of the first round of the Elite 1 championship in Cameroon which is witnessing a forced break. Clubs have decided not to play the second phase of the championship until certain conditions especially financial have been met by FECAFOOT. Concertation talks we hear are underway for the teams to hit the pitches this weekend latest.
