Chelsea's Senegalese goalkeeper is among the finalists for the best player awards of the last Champions League. He is the only African on UEFA's list.
UEFA announced the finalists for the best goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and striker awards of the last Champions League on Friday 13 August. Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is the only African in the running.
The Senegalese goalkeeper is competing with Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid) and Ederson (Manchester City). In nine games, he has made nine clean sheets (games without conceding a goal). "No goalkeeper has achieved this performance for his first participation," said L'Équipe.
In addition to Edouard Mendy, Champions League winners Chelsea have four other players among the finalists. They are defenders Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rüdiger, and midfielders Ngolo Kanté and Jorginho.
Each position for the UEFA awards had ten nominees for three places in the final. The jury is made up of the 32 coaches of the teams that qualified for the group stage in the last edition (coaches were not allowed to vote for a player from their club) and 55 journalists (one per UEFA member association).
The winners will be announced on Thursday 26 August, in the margins of the Champions League 2021-2022 group stage draw in Istanbul, Turkey.
