Football - WC 2022 Qualifier: Uganda drops skipper Okwi ahead of Rwanda tie

Uganda Cranes head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has dropped team captain Emmanuel Arnold Okwi ahead of the  Group E double header ties against Rwanda in the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers.

Sredojevic announced the squad on Friday without Okwi and striker Derrick Nsibambi who joined Ethiopia Premier League side Sidama Coffee SC this week.

Rwanda’s Amavubi Stars who are bottom of Group E with 1 point will host Uganda Cranes in Kigali on October 7th, before the two teams face-off again in Kampala three days later.

Okwi who started in the last two games against Kenya and Mali has been without a club for a few months now after Egyptian side  Al Ittihad Alexandria Club did not renew his contract.

Among the senior foreign based players invited include Khalid Aucho who recently moved to Tanzania’s Young Africans SC, Isaac Muleme who features for FK Viktoria Žižkov in the  Czech Republic, and Timothy Denis Awany who plies his trade with S.C. Ironi Ashdod in the Israel Premier League.

Uganda Cranes started their campaign with a goalless draw away to Kenya, before they fired blanks in the 0-0 draw against Mali at the St. Marys Stadium, Kitende.

Sredojevic’s team will however miss the services of defender Murushid Juuko who was shown a direct red card in the home game against Mali last month.
