Lille easily beat Lens (3-0) on Friday night in a one-sided match. With this new victory, they are closer to the title.
A northern derby that has created headlines in the past was made to tilt on one side as Lille travelled to take on noisy neighbors RC Lens in a decisive French Ligue 1 match. Playing away from home especially at Lens was termed a difficult one for Lille prior to the game as pundits were of the opinion that the Ligue 1 leaders could likely drop points.
Contrarily it was an easy ride for Lille, a master stroke with a huge outcome on the standings. Lille are just a step away from becoming champions this season.
Lille strides away from PSG
The watchword was clear: win the three points to distance themselves from the Parisians by 4 before their match against Rennes on Sunday. From the start, the Dogues quickly went on the attack. An offensive choice that will pay off in the second minute.
Following a good collective action of Lille, Jonathan Bamba is hooked in the area. The referee points to the penalty spot. The Turkish striker, Burak Yilmaz, converted it without shaking, scoring his fifth goal in his last five games.
After this cold shower, Lensois try to react but without being able to approach the goals of their opponents. Lille, the best defense in Ligue 1 this season, mastered their subject. In the 37th minute, the 35-year-old Yilmaz scored his second goal of the evening and put his teammates in the clear.
A duel for a place in Europe
The third goal for Galtier's team was scored by Jonathan Christian David, who definitively sealed the fate of the match. After this fine victory, Soumaré's team-mates can calmly prepare for the reception of Saint Etienne for the 37th day. Of course, there are still two games to go before we can expect to see the champion this season in Ligue 1. But, more than ever, Lille have reason to hope to lift the trophy for the fourth time in their history. Racing Club de Lens, fifth in the league, was the last of the big obstacles standing in their way.
With this latest defeat after the one against Paris Saint-Germain last week, Lens is under threat from Olympique Marseille for Europa League qualification. The Marseille team will travel to Saint Etienne on Sunday. And if they win, they will be three points ahead of Lens. This will make for a great end to the season.
