Klopp's tense exchange with a journalist over AFCON statement

Klopp's tense exchange with a journalist over AFCON statement

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp was questioned by a journalist about his comments on the African Cup of Nations after his side's victory over Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The Reds manager described the competition as a "small tournament". This caused the beginning of a controversy. If the beginning of the exchange was courteous, the tone quickly rose between the two men.

Jürgen Klopp has been in charge of the team since the start of the season, and has been in charge of the team since the start of the season: Jürgen Klopp probably thought he was having a quiet night after Liverpool's 2-0 win over Porto on Wednesday night. It was the opposite for the English coach in a press conference. If the main questions revolved around the match, journalist Ojora Babatunde challenged him about his comments on the 2021 AFCON, which he described as a "small tournament."

"Hello Jürgen, during your last pre-match press briefing you called the AFCON a "small tournament". I think that's an insult to the players, an insult to the fans, an insult to the people of the continent and I think you owe them an apology," the journalist began. Jurgen Klopp, who didn't see it coming, tried to defuse the situation by arguing that it was a misnomer on his part and a misinterpretation of his thoughts. "I didn't mean it like that, I don't know why you understand it like that," he initially defended himself.

"You wouldn't have said that for a tournament in Europe"
Faced with the insistence of his interlocutor, Jürgen Klopp developed his thoughts afterwards. "I had no intention of referring to the African Cup of Nations as a "small tournament" or the African continent as a small continent. What I meant, if you look at the whole press conference, and you might have understood it properly, I said there was no international break until March. I said "oh there's a little tournament in January"... It was ironic. It's a big tournament and we lose our best players in that tournament."

This was not enough to calm things down as the journalist then retorted: "You wouldn't say that for a tournament in Europe. You wouldn't say that about a 'small tournament in Europe'." It was a remark that had the tone to annoy Jürgen Klopp, who cut short the exchange with a scathing: "If you want to misunderstand me, that's up to you.
