Rohr's future hangs in balance

The Nigeria Football Federation has refuted reports that Gernot Rohr has been been sacked as the Super Eagles technical adviser by the country's football governing body on Thursday.

The development comes on the heels of worldwide reports earlier on Thursday, claiming that the Franco-German has been relieved of his job following the lackluster display of the country's senior national team in Tuesday's 1-1 draw against Cape Verde in their final Group C World Cup qualifier in Lagos.

The three-time African champions, finished top of Group C with 13 points to qualify for the World Cup playoffs next March but the widespread calls for the sack of the coach follows the team's poor showing against less-ranked teams.

In a statement made avaliable to SportNewsAfrica by NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire, NFF President Amaju Melvin Pinnick, said that no such decision has been taken yet but hinted that the football house is not ruling out the possibility of breaking ties with the 68 year-old tacticiana

“The Board of the NFF is studying the report of the Technical Committee, which it submitted after the match against Cape Verde in Lagos on Tuesday,” said Pinnick.

"There are a number of possibilities but we have not taken a decision to sack Gernot Rohr. I want to assure that whatever decision is eventually taken will be one that will please the generality of Nigerians.

“Mr Rohr has a contract with the NFF and there is a procedure for disengagement. If we get to that bridge, both parties will look at the contract and see what has to be done both ways.

"The Super Eagles' squad is a national asset and we are just fortunate to be in that space to take decisions. Any decision we take must be what will be acceptable to Nigerians from far and near."

With Pinnick's reaction, Rohr's future in charge of the Super Eagles hangs in the balance, with his current deal set to expire in December 2022. Rohr, who was appointed in 2016 has led the Super Eagles in 54 international matches over the course of five years and three months, winning 28 of those matches.
