Nigeria's Osimhen to miss Afcon 2022 after injured Napoli star ruled out for 90 days

Osimhen blow for Nigeria

Victor Osimhen is set to be out of action for three months and has been ruled out of Nigeria's campaign at the Cameroon 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon after undergoing a successful surgery on Tuesday.

The West African nation have not only been dealt a major blow by Osimhen's injury for January's African showpiece but also face doubt of securing the services of the youthful striker for March's Qatar 2022 World Cup playoff.

The Lagos-born forward was forced off during Napoli's 3-2 Serie A loss to Inter Milan on Sunday evening at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. His abrupt exit from the pitch happened following a clash of heads with defender Milan Skriniar and he was eventually replaced by Andrea Petagna in the 56th minute of the encounter.

On Sunday evening, Napoli have confirmed striker Victor Osimhen will undergo surgery on Tuesday after he fractured his eye socket and cheekbone in the team's Serie A defeat against Inter Milan on Sunday.

Preliminary assessments on the extent of Osimhen's injury had raised fears among Nigerians and the former Wolfsburg and Lille star will now be sidelined for at least ninety days following the successful surgery on Tuesday.

“On Tuesday morning, Victor Osimhen was operated on his cheekbone and eye socket by Gianpaolo Tartaro, who was assisted by Dr Mario Santagata with Dr Raffaele Canonico also present,” the Italian top-flight side, in a statement published on their website wrote.

“Titanium plates and screws were used in the operation. The player is doing well and will remain under observation for the next few days. Osimhen is expected to return to action in three months. ”

Besides being a blow to Napoli, Osimhen will not be avaliable as the three-time African champions will be hoping to claim their fourth crown at the biennial African football showpiece in Cameroon.

Osimhen has been an outstanding figure for Gernot Rohr's side, notably in the World Cup qualifiers as he has scored nine goals in his last ten matches for Nigeria in all competitions.

At club level, he is destined to miss at least 16 Serie A fixtures, beginning with Sunday's showdown at Lazio.
