NPFL Review: Rivers United win first ever Nigerian league title

Rivers United win the NPFL title

By Samuel Ahmadu

Rivers United on Saturday emerged champions of 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) after Plateau United succumbed to Akwa United defeat in Uyo.

With three matches to the end of the current league campaign and possible nine points at stake, Rivers United are ahead with 10 points against rival Plateau United.

Despite losing 2-1 to Nasarawa Amazons in Lafia on Sunday, the Pride of Rivers cruised home to rule Nigeria for the first time in their history. With that, Stanley Eguma's men have been guaranteed an automatic place in next season's Café Champions League.

In other matches, Enyimba's dream of qualifying for the continent suffered a huge setback as they could only record a 0-0 home draw against cross-city rivals Heartland at the Enyimba International Stadium.

Following a 2-1 loss at MFM, Finidi George's men welcomed the Naze Millionaires to Aba, however, they capitulated in their quest to secure all points despite dominating ball possession.

In Kaduna, former champions Kano Pillars subdued Enugu Rangers 1-0 at the Sani Abacha Stadium. After a goalless first half, captain Rabiu Ali put his team ahead from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute.

The Sai Masu Gida had numerous chances to increase their lead, but they were stopped by their wastefulness. Despite the loss, Rangers still occupy the fourth position on the NPFL log having garnered 52 points from 35 matches played so far.

Two wins in their last three matches could hand Rangers a ticket to next season's Champions League or a place in the Café Confederation Cup at least.

In Akure, Sunshine Stars got a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over MFM FC at the Akure Township Stadium, while Shooting Stars Football Club threw away a two-goal lead to end their outing against Abia Warriors in a 2-2 draw.
