Sierra Leone was one of the surprise packages of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations despite their elimination from the group stage. They are now preparing for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Leone Stars will however have to deal with a difficult group composed of Nigeria, Guinea Bissau and the winner of the match between Mauritius and Sao Tome and Principe.
The Sierra Leoneans will start their campaign in Group A against the Super Eagles. It will be no easy task for Steven Caulker. "It's going to be tough but I'm delighted to be starting these qualifiers, we have a lot of new talent, new players, a new system and a new identity. I'm really excited to be able to lead this group into the qualifiers," the new team captain said in an interview on the CAF website. The center-back added: "Our qualifying group is going to be tough, obviously Nigeria will be looking to bounce back from the disappointment of their elimination against Ghana at the 2022 World Cup."
