After qualifying Nigeria for the Sydney 2022 Women's Basketball World Cup, Otis Hughley is claiming an unpaid bonus. The coach of the three-time African champions has not received his bonuses from the Olympic Games and for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. "I love Nigeria and I want to see them win the world championship or [a] gold medal on the world stage. Unfortunately, I am owed the World Cup qualifying tournament in Serbia and the Olympic Games. I've tried everything I can, but I can't keep doing it for free," the American coach said.
Hughley, a former assistant coach of the NBA's Sacramento Kings, initially signed a one-year contract with the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) in 2018 before a crisis rocked the body. He also wants to be sure of his future as Nigeria's head coach.
With only six months to go before the Women's World Cup in Australia, where Nigeria has been drawn in Group B along with tournament hosts, Canada, France, Japan and Serbia, the country's sports ministry is keen to resolve the crisis in the NBBF.
