Cameroon is definitely gaining more international fame as a sports nation with infrastructural prowess. After the women's AFCON in handball in June and the football AFCON next year, the country of the Indomitable Lions has just been designated to host the women's Afrobasket 2021. The continental competition will take place from 17 to 26 September at the Palais Polyvalent des Sports in Yaounde, the country's capital.
The announcement was made by the International Basketball Association (FIBA). A decision that follows "the agreement signed on behalf of the Cameroonian government by the Minister of Sports of Cameroon Kombi Mouelle," said FIBA. The 2021 Women's Afrobasket will bring together 12 nations.
And according to FIBA, some of them are automatically qualified. Notably the host country and those who reached the last four of the competition two years ago. This is Nigeria, the defending champion, Senegal, unfortunate finalist, Mali (3rd) and Mozambique (4th). This leaves seven spots to be filled.
A regional qualifying tournaments should be organized by the end of May. "The last tickets will be obtained by July, the winners of each of them qualifying directly for the final phase in Cameroon," explained the world basketball body.
