The first teams to qualify for the semi-finals of the African Champions League are known. They are Al Ahly of Egypt and Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa. The Egyptians drew (1-1), this Saturday, May 22, away to South Africans of Mamelodi Sundowns, in the quarterfinal second leg. In the first leg, the Egyptians had secured a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Kaizer Chiefs must congratulate themselves for a big victory (4-0) in the first leg. The second leg was no near formality for the South Africans as their opponents Simba almost turned the tables this Saturday in Der es Salam on Saturday. Simba beat Chiefs 3-0 and narrowly missed out on prolongation. It was a well deserved victory for the Tanzanians who can walk home heads high as a force to note in the African continental competitions. A new giant from the Horn of Africa.
The other two semi-finalists will be known at the end of the last quarter-finals, which will be played soon (4 pm UTC): Esperance of Tunis will have to over turn an away 2-0 loss when they host CR Belouizdad in Tunis. Wydad of Morocco will bring into the game a 1-1 away advantage they had over MC Algers in the away leg.
The first leg of the semi-finals is scheduled for 18 June. A week later, on 26 June, the second leg will take place. The Champions League final is scheduled for 17 July.
Winners of the 2019-2020 edition, Al Ahly are well on course to retain the Champions League trophy and why not win the FIFA Club World Cup competition, the only trophy missing in their huge and illustrious cabinet.
