The Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) has confirmed that no teams from Somalia and South Sudan will participate in the CAF Women’s Champions League Zonal qualifier.
Kenya will host the Zonal qualifiers for teams in the CECAFA region between July 17th to August 1st.
“Somalia and South Sudan have officially written to confirm non participation,” Auka Gecheo, the CECAFA Executive Director told Sport News Africa.
Victor Lawrence Lual, the General Secretary of the South Sudan Football Federation (SSFA) made it clear that although they are about to complete the women’s League, they will not send a team. “No club is ready financially to participate,” added Lual.
Auka said teams from other member Associations have confirmed participation, although Eritrea, Rwanda and Tanzania will send in the names of their teams this week.
The team that have confirmed participation include; PVP FC (Burundi), FAD Club (Djibouti), Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (Ethiopia), Vihiga Queens FC (Kenya), Aldefaa Khartoum FC (Sudan) and Lady Doves WFC from Uganda.
But before the CAF Women’s Champions League Zonal qualifier, CECAFA will stage the U-23 Men’s Challenge Cup to take place July 3-18th in Ethiopia.
The region will also stage the CECAFA Kagame Club Championship in Tanzania, while the CECAFA U-20 Women’s tournament takes place in Uganda and the CECAFA Senior Women’s Challenge Cup moves to Djibouti in December.
