The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has rewarded the national team, The Walias for qualifying for the Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Esayas Jira, the EFF President told Sport News Africa that they rewarded the entire team and officials on Tuesday for a job well done. “We offered them US$150,000 for qualification for AFCON. We also expect the government to come up and also reward the team at some point,” added Jira.
Coach Wubetu Abate’s team qualified for AFCON from Group K alongside Ivory Coast. Ethiopia had last qualified for Africa’s biggest football showpiece nine years ago.
Jira made it clear that they will continue motivating the team so that they perform well in different tournaments. “We have a good team and will make sure we give them all the support to make sure we have a strong team at the AFCON next year which will compete for the trophy,” added Jira.
Ethiopia together with Sudan will be the flag bearers for the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) zone at the AFCON competition to take place in Cameroon.
“We are now waiting for the program of the technical bench ahead of the start of the FIFA World Cup qualifying matches which starts in June,” added Jira.
The Ethiopian Football Federation President also made it clear that they are preparing to host a successful U-23 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in the town of Bahir Dar. The tournament which will open the 2021 CECAFA calendar will take place July 3-18th. “We are working hard with the relevant authorities to make sure that we organize a successful U-23s Challenge Cup,” added Jira.
