CAFWCL: Champions Sundowns visit SAFA president

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies paid a visit to SAFA president Danny Jordaan after their Champions League success

The Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies paid a special visit to South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan after making history in the CAF Women’s Champions League.

On Friday, 19 November, Sundowns recorded 2-0 victory over Hasaacas Ladies from Ghana and became the first club to clinch the Women’s Champions League in its inaugural year. In doing so, Sundowns became the first team on the African continent to win both the men and women continental titles. The Sundowns Ladies were given a warm welcome at OR Tambo International Airport when they returned to South Africa on Sunday, 21 November, with hundreds of supporters coming out to congratulate them for what they achieved in Egypt. Sundowns finished the competition without conceding a goal.

Speaking to the Sundowns Ladies at SAFA House in Johannesburg, Jordaan praised the ladies for playing their best football in the final.

’I am glad because you left the best for the last. You played your best football of the tournament during the final where you showed your class,’’ he said to the ladies.

“You need to do this all over again next year, win the COSAFA Regional play offs and qualify for the CAF Champions League tournament. And if you win again next year, there is an added incentive because the ultimate CAF winners will qualify for the FIFA Women’s Club championship,’’ he added.

Sundowns, who were accompanied by club chairman Thlopie Motsepe to SAFA House, will be back in league action as they look to defend their title.
