CAFWCL: Sundowns Ladies clinch first ever Champions League title

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies celebrate winning the CAF Women's Champions League

The Mamelodi Sundowns ladies team made history by becoming the first team to win the CAF Women’s Champions League in Egypt on Friday night, 19 November.

The South Africans scored a goal in each half to register a 2-0 victory over Ghanaian club Hasaacas Ladies, making sure that they finished the competition without conceding a goal

Determined to follow in the footsteps of their men’s team, who won the Champions League in 2016, the Sundowns ladies took the lead at the 30 June Stadium just after the half hour mark, through the boot of Chuene Morifi from close range. Hasaacas tried to get back into the game before the break, but the Sundowns defence and goalkeeper Andile Dlamini were solid at the back.

In the second half, Sundowns knew that they had to extend their lead or risk losing the lead they had. It took just under 20 minutes in the second half for Sundowns to give themselves some breathing space with a goal from the dangerous Andisiwe Mgcoyi. It was a calm finish from the experienced striker, who has previously played overseas. The goal stood after there was a VAR check.

Not to be outdone by their opponents, Hasaacas pushed to try to reduce the deficit, but Dlamini pulled off an incredible save in the final 15 minutes of the game.

Sundowns player Regina Mogolola, who came on for Karabo Makhurubetshi in the final five minutes of regulation time, was sent off for a dangerous tackle in the referee's added time.
