When leaving Burundi for Ethiopia where the CECAFA U23 tournament is taking place since July 17, Jimmy Ndayizeye had indicated that their goal was to qualify for the semi-finals. This was achieved after a 1-1 draw against Ethiopia on Friday 23 July.
However, it was a difficult match for Burundi. Ethiopia dominated the Swallows throughout the first half. The Burundians even conceded the opening goal. Jimmy Ndayizeye's players chased the score until Issa Hakizimana equalized in the 58th minute.
The match then ended 1-1. This draw was enough for the Burundian team to reach the semi-finals. In the first match against Eritrea, Burundi had largely won (3-0).
In the semi-finals, Burundi will play against Kenya. A big game for the Swallows. But this does not scare the Burundian coach. He said that they will manage game after game and he hopes to play the final.
