Al Ahly striker Percy Tau will not form part of the South African national team to take on Ethiopia in back-to-back FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
On Monday, 27 September, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos named his final squad to take on the East Africans next month, trimming it down from the 34-man he had announced last week to 23.
Tau, arguably South Africa’s best player, is not part of the team while he recovers from an injury, which means other attacking players will have to come to the party to try to inspire the team to success in the two matches against Ethiopia. Luther Singh, who plays his football in Denmark for FC Copenhagen, has also not been included in the squad.
South Africa will take on Ethiopia in Addis Ababa on October 9 and then Broos’ men will host the same side at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on October 12.
In his final squad, Broos included Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa, who has been in good form recently for the Soweto giants.
