Football - WC Qualifiers: Morocco silence Sudan in Rabat

The Atlas Lions of Morocco scored in each half to defeat Sudan 2-0 in a Group I FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifier played in Rabat on Thursday night.

Naif Aguerd gave the hosts the lead after 10 minutes at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. The Sudan defenders failed to clear the ball out of danger and Aguerd made no mistake shooting straight into the goal.

Sudan tried to close out the highly attacking Morocco team, but failed to break through to create many scoring opportunities.

In the second half Sudan conceded an early own goal through   Abuaagla Abdalla after 53 minutes. The defender deflected the ball past his goalkeeper.

Morocco continued to dominate play, but failed to score more goals. Sudan made only three attempts on target at the Morocco goal.

Sudan coach Coach Vahid Halilhodzic said he was not impressed with the way his players had played. “We need to go back and prepare well for our next game because we need to win at home,” added Halilhodzic.

The Sudan team which has been camped in the Middle East ahead of the qualifiers will next host Guinea Bissau in Khartoum next week. Guinea and Guinea Bissau settled for a 1-1 draw in their opening match on Wednesday.

Sudan and Ethiopia are the only two teams from the Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) that have qualified for the 2021 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) slated to take place in Cameroon.
