The new Zambian MTN Super League season got underway, with 12 of the 18 teams in the topflight opening their campaigns.
On Saturday, 11 September, there were five matches played in the league, as Buildcon and newly promoted Konkola Blades registered victories to kickstart their campaigns with maximum points in the bag.
Buildcon were away from home in their 2-1 victory over Green Eagles, making an early statement after finishing last season in 11th place. Eagles finished fifth last season and many would have probably backed them to beat Buildcon, especially because they were on home soil, but the visitors were the ones who were all smiles at the final whistle. Buildcon’s victory was inspired by a brace from Lubinda Mundia, who inspired the come-from-behind victory for the visitors.
Ronald Chibwe was the hero for Blades, who beat Power Dynamos. Chibwe netted just after the hour-mark for the hosts to seal an important win for them at the start of the campaign.
In the other matches played on Saturday, Prison Leopards played to a 1-1 draw with Forest Rangers while newly promoted sides Kafue Celtic and Chambisi could not be separated in a goalless draw.
There was only one match played on Sunday, 12 September, as visitors Nkhwazi edged Nkana 3-2 in a five-goal thriller.
Defending champions Zesco United were not in action over the weekend as they were taking part in the CAF Champions League. Zanaco were also playing in the Champions League. Kabwe Warriors and Red Arrows were involved in CAF Confederation Cup action, which is why they also did not play a league match.
