Government to investigate massive retirement of Uganda Cranes players

Three players on this team retired in last seven days

The Ministry of Education and Sports in Uganda has made it clear that they are going to investigate the reason why several senior players of the national football team are retiring.

In the last one week three senior players Hassan Wasswa Mawanda, skipper and South African based Denis Masinde Onyango and US based Mike Azira announced their retirement from the national team.

The development comes after the Uganda Cranes lost 1-0 away to Malawi three weeks ago and failed to qualify for their third straight Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

John Chrysostom Muyingo, the State Minister for Higher Education said while appearing in Parliament on Thursday that the Government will investigate the exodus of Uganda Cranes players from the National team. “Our Ministry is interested in this matter and will investigate it,” said Muyingo.

The members of Parliament who sit on the Parliamentary Committee of Education had asked Muyingo and the State Minister for Sports, Hamson Obua to explain why many players are retiring from the national team.

On his part the State Minister for Sports Obua said there is always time for everything in life. “There is time for service, time to serve and time to exit,” added the Minister referring to the players who have retired.

Obua also told the members that the skipper had clearly indicated before the last AFCON qualifying game against Malawi that he was going to retire.

“We are however studying the dynamics of these retirements and I think some of them are also because of the forthcoming elections of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations,” added the State Minister for Sports.

The elective FUFA Assembly will be held in August 2021 in a venue yet to be confirmed. The incumbent and Executive member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Eng. Moses Hassim Magogo has indicated that he will seek another term.

Former Uganda Cranes player and now a director of second tier FUFA Big League side Proline Football Club Mujib Kasule and a Member of Parliament for Makindye West, Allan Alosious Sewanyana have also come out to announce they will contest for the FUFA presidency.
