Nigeria Professional Football League gets 2021/22 season commencement date

NPFL gets kick off date

The 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season is scheduled to kick off on December 17, 2021 across 10 centres in the country, SportNewsAfrica can exclusively report.

In a leaked season's opening day schedule, defending champions Akwa United will commence their title defence at home in a Matchday 1 fixture against former winners Kano Pillars at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

In Gombe,  Gombe United will welcome fellow newly promoting side Shooting Stars at the Pantami Stadium as both sides play their first game in the topflight after varying years in the second division.

Lobi Stars will host Rivers United at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi with the club’s Manager Eddy Dombraye leading his side against his state's Pride of Benue for the first time in many years.

And the first oriental derby of the new season on the opening day will see Enyimba FC slug it out with arch-rivals Abia Warriors in Aba, while Enugu Rangers travel to Katsina to face the Changi boys, Katsina United.

Elswhere, Niger Tornadoes will entertain Plateau United at their adopted home ground in Kaduna while Sunshine Stars face their former manager, Kabiru Dogo and Wikki Tourists at the Ondo Sports Complex in Akure.

And Kwara United. who came close to securing a Champions League spot last season will take on Dakkada in Ilorin, while MFM FC will be visited by their regional rivals Remo Stars in a South-West derby at the Agege Stadium.

On the same day, Nasarawa United will travel to Owerri to face Heartland in another opening day fixture.
