Zambian giants Zesco United have been crowned the MTN Super League champions for the ninth time following their 2-0 victory over NAPSA Stars on Sunday, 13 June.
The club from Ndola registered a comfortable victory over the club from Lusaka, thanks to goals from dangerman Jesse Were, who recently reached the 100-goal mark for the club, and Kelvin Kampamba. Were opened the scoring five minutes before the break and Kampamba wrapped up the victory with a 81st minute goal.
Zesco have secured the league title with three rounds of matches still to play in the Super League. They have an 11-point lead at the summit.
Their ninth league triumph means they have now recorded the same number of titles as Mufulira Wanderers. They are still four titles behind Nkana, who have won the league on 13 occasions. What’s incredible about Zesco’s nine league titles is that they have won them in the last 14 years, which means they have been the dominant club in Zambian football.
Zesco have been superb this season, recording 20 victories in the 31 matches they have played. They have recorded four draws and seven defeats this season. What has been key for them this season is their defence. They have the best defence in the league with 23 goals conceded and this has helped inspire them to another title.
By winning the title, Zesco have booked themselves a place in next season’s CAF Champions League.
