AFCON 2015: Egypt vs Senegal as per numbers

The triumph of Senegal against Egypt in 2021

For the younger and even the older ones, the most striking memory of the direct confrontations between Egypt and Senegal is the final of the AFCON 2021, played in 2022 in Cameroon. Beaten in the final at the previous edition by Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez, the Lions found themselves once again in the final of the African Cup of Nations facing another northern power house.

After a sluggish start against Eswatini, Sadio Mané and his team-mates held off Egypt  4-2 on penalties after a goalless. Edouard Mendy pulled out his cards  by stopping two penalties in Yaoundé.

From this match, Senegal still has 7 players present in 2025 in Morocco against 8 for Egypt. The memories are therefore still vivid on both sides, with the feeling of revenge among the Pharaohs who, after this final, were eliminated by the Lions in Diamniadio (1-1; 3-1) in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané find themselves in the final phase of the AFCON for a last try (maybe).

Sadio Mané vs Mo Salah, the other match in the match

Since March 29, 2022, and the qualification of Senegal for the 2022 World Cup at the expense of Egypt, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané have no longer clashed. Both aged 33 years, this semi-final of the AFCON  2025 will probably be the last selection match between the two former Liverpool teammates unless they play the extra time until AFCON 2027 and fate brings them together again.

In the national team, Mané and Salah faced off on three occasions. The Senegalese has two victories against a success for the Pharaon. Sadio Mané has never lost in a knockout match against Mohamed Salah, which makes the stakes even more important for the semi-final on Wednesday.
