Athletics - Burkina Faso: Between 'ghost' records and new stars

The 2025 season in athletics in Burkina Faso saw the emergence of new gems like Sita Sibiri, Kambou Sié Fahigé and Coulibaly Daouda, but several historical chronos have been holding out for 20, 30 or even 50 years. Burkina Faso athletics shines with its individualities through the performances of Hugues Fabrice Zango or those of Marthe Koala, but global renewal remains a major challenge.

Athletics - Burkina Faso: Between 'ghost' records and new stars

Athletics in Burkina Faso continues to write its history with international ink. Upon reading the table of national senior records, updated to November 27, 2025 by the Burkina Faso Athletics Federation, an observation is necessary. The country of honest men excels thanks to exceptional talents, often trained or confirmed abroad, but struggles to break old records that still haunt tablets.

A young guard full of promises
On one hand, fresh and promising performances. Sita Sibiri distinguished herself as the revelation of the 2025 season in the 400 m. The sprinter improved her own national record from 51’’74 recorded in Accra, Ghana, in March 2024, to 51’66, achieved on July 19, 2025, in Paris. A significant progression that confirms its rise and strengthens the presence of Burkinabe women on the continental scene.

In throwing, a rapidly emerging discipline in Burkina Faso, two athletes made an impression. Kambou Sié Fahigé raised the record for the disc to 59.53 m in Abbeville, France, in July 2024, improving his own mark. Coulibaly Daouda meanwhile inscribed his name in gold letters on the javelin with 65.49 m in Accra, Ghana, in August 2025.

These advances in strength tests contrast with the historical domination of jumps. Hugues Fabrice Zango, even though he retired from the slopes, remains unbeatable in the triple jump with his monstrous 18.07 m in 2021, a world-class performance. Marthe Koala, with extraordinary versatility, holds records in the 100 m hurdles (12’81), the long jump with 6.94 m in 2023 and the heptathlon with 6250 points.

Records that have become dusty
However, the table also reveals a more contrasted reality. Several records date from another era and resist time. Such is the case of Ouoba Kondia in the 800 m men’s race who had completed 1'52''1 in April 1974, which is more than 51 years old. Idrissa Sanou in the men’s 100m had achieved a time of 10’'14 in 2002, almost 25 years. In the women’s high jump, Irène Tiendrébéogo recorded a jump of 1.94 m in 1999. In the men’s high jump, Boubacar Séré jumped 2.22 m in 2007.

These old chronos question the limited infrastructure, the sometimes insufficient supervision in the background and middle-ground, and a strong dependence on high-level European or American centers that partly explain this partial freeze. Missiri Sawadogo, National Technical Director (DTN) of the Burkina Faso Athletics Federation, recalls the strict accreditation criteria: official representation under the national colors, competition recognized by World Athletics or the CAA, and commitment to the selection.

"An athlete who refuses to defend Burkina Faso will not see his performance integrated,"

 he insists.

The 2025 season, with its exploits in Paris, Tallinn, Gothenburg, Abbeville or Accra, shows a growing integration of Burkinabè into the world elite. It remains to transform these individual outbursts into a lasting collective dynamic.

The challenge for the coming years?

Invest in the local base, modernize facilities, particularly at the Ouagadougou 4th-August Stadium, and build a competitive long- and middle-range sector. For if Burkina Faso already has its legends, it also deserves new generations capable of erasing the glorious shadows of the past.

Athletics in Burkina Faso is not only a question of records, it is also a question of transmission and national ambition.
