In a state of decline, amidst new layoffs unilaterally decided by the office of the secretary general, CAF is finally getting ready to turn the page on Véron Mosengo-Omba.
If the president, Patrice Motsepe, has expressed the wish to keep him for an additional year, the executive committee does not share this opinion. Although timid, not to say frightened to face facts, the Committee had benefited from the speech of Samir Sobha, the president of the Mauritian federation, who had asked for compliance with the statutes since Véron Mosengo-Omba had exceeded the age limit since last October 15.
The decisions made by Véron Mosengo-Omba canceled?
Leading CAF as he sees fit with his circle of insiders, the latter had promoted several people without the approval of the Comex, including the head of its office, Cédrick Aghey, at the head of the legal department.
Recently, he had also dismissed, without the approval of the Executive Committee again, Yassin Osman Robleh, the head of the jurisdictional bodies, whose professionalism was nevertheless unanimously emphasized internally. A decision that shocked, pushing a member of the Comex, Augustin Senghor, requested a meeting with Patrice Motsepe to discuss the subject.
Internally, many question the statutory legitimacy of the decisions made by Véron Mosengo-Omba, and whether they cannot be overturned in the event of legal proceedings – given that he does not have the right to exercise -, or even directly by the Comex, if the latter remembers that he normally has a function other than receiving his per diems.
Opposition of the North African federations
Finally preparing to run for the presidency of the Congolese Football Federation, as Sport News Africa revealed in January, Véron Mosengo-Omba continues to clean up within the CAF, placing trusted people in important positions.
If this method will be discussed during the next Comex, it remains to find its successor. A name has logically been put forward, that of Samson Adamu, the head of competitions at the CAF.
Recognized for his seriousness, his profile has many supporters among the Comex. Nevertheless, the federations of North Africa are not very excited, and that is to say the least, given the recurring tensions of recent years. "Let’s say they have no desire to see him in such a position," explains a member of the Executive Committee. In the first place, Egypt and Morocco which have a certain influence.
Behind this reluctance was hidden another increased rivalry for some time between North Africa and sub-Saharan, Arabic-speaking and the others, which short-circuits the reports of a poor CAF with a president less and less audible and credible, who has absolutely no idea of what is really happening in the confederation he leads.
