Cameroon: Samuel Eto'o – Gérémie Njitap, the unending standoff

On 9 March 2026, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) issued a long-awaited decision in the dispute between the Fécafoot and the Synafoc. But far from closing the file, the sentence feeds two opposing readings and prolongs a now structural confrontation between Samuel Eto'o and Gérémie Njitap, former teammates turned institutional opponents.

Cameroon: Samuel Eto'o – Gérémie Njitap, the unending standoff

It all starts in the fall of 2024. On October 2 and 18, two players in Cameroonian football seized the Fécafoot chaired by Samuel Eto'o to request the "withdrawal of approval" from the National Union of Cameroonian Footballers (Synafoc) led by Geremi Njitap, arguing in particular for his legal inadequacy and his inability to represent amateur players. On 7 October, the Emergency Committee of the federation places the issue on the agenda for the next General Assembly.

The process is accelerating. On November 7, Gérémi Njitap is informed by a bailiff of the inclusion of the item on the agenda. On 15 November, the Executive Committee formally recommended the withdrawal of approval. The next day, November 16, 2024, the General Assembly adopts, more than three quarters of them, resolution n°1 withdrawing the approval of the Synafoc and recognizing in parallel the National Association of Cameroonian Footballers (ANFC). A structuring decision, which reconfigures the representation of players in Cameroon.

A procedural battle against a backdrop of cross-accusations
As of May 2, 2025, the Synafoc initiates an urgent procedure before the Chamber of Conciliation and Arbitration (CCA), denouncing a «denial of justice» and violations of the rights of the defense. The union notably disputes a "disguised exclusion", considering that the statutory conditions were not met.

Against him, the Fécafoot disputes the admissibility of the appeal, invoking lack of quality, non-exhaustion of internal remedies and foreclosure. On May 22, 2025, the CCA finally rejected the request of the Synafoc and validated the resolutions of the General Assembly of the Fécafoot. The trade union is ordered to pay the costs, fixed at 1.2 million FCFA.

On June 11, 2025, the file takes an international dimension with the referral to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Synafoc requests an accelerated procedure and hopes to invalidate federal decisions.

The CAS settles... without extinguishing the conflict
On March 9, 2026, the CAS hands down its sentence. Legally, it is clear: the appeal of the Synafoc is declared admissible, but rejected on the merits. The CCA’s decision is upheld, the arbitration costs are borne by the union, which must also pay 4,000 Swiss francs to Fécafoot.

In the wake, the Federation welcomes a decision that "confirms the regularity and legality" of its actions and affirms that it "comes to definitively close this procedure". The message is clear: for the body led by Samuel Eto'o, the case is legally settled.

Two irreconcilable readings of the same decision
But from the next day, March 10, 2026, the Synafoc offers a radically different reading. In his statement, he states that the CAS "explicitly recognized that the Fécafoot was guilty of a denial of justice", due to the delays accumulated in the processing of internal remedies.

The union also insists that the rejection of his appeal would be based on "a strictly procedural reason related to the non-appearance of a third party, the CNA", and not on a validation of the withdrawal of accreditation. An interpretation that allows him to claim a symbolic victory, despite the unfavorable outcome. "Even if the law has been deliberately curbed by form, justice remains on its side," he says.

A confrontation that goes beyond the legal framework

Over the proceedings, the file reveals an opposition between two major figures in Cameroonian football. In its writings, the Synafoc explicitly mentions a "context of personal and judicial conflict" with Samuel Eto'o, suggesting that federal decisions are part of a retaliatory logic.

La Fécafoot, on the other hand, defends a strictly statutory approach, arguing that the Synafoc, constituted as a syndicate, cannot represent amateur players and that its approval had never been definitively consolidated. Two visions of football and its governance collide, each mobilizing the law to legitimize their position.

An arm wrestle that is bound to continue

Despite the decision of the CAS, neither side seems ready to give ground. The Fécafoot speaks of "closed proceedings" and calls for unity, while the Synafoc announces that it wants to "draw all the legal consequences" from the sentence and reserves the right to initiate new actions.

In this face-to-face, each judicial decision becomes an additional episode of a deeper confrontation. Behind the procedural arguments and the communiqués, a lasting rivalry is emerging between Samuel Eto'o and Gérémi Njitap, whose extensions continue to structure, at the bottom, the balances of Cameroonian football.
