History in the World Cup: 4th participation after 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2026
The qualifying course: Imperial Elephants
Côte d'Ivoire has validated its qualification for the 2026 World Cup at the end of a nearly perfect campaign. Emerse Faé’s men finished at the top of Group F ahead of Gabon without conceding any defeat. Better still, the Elephants have completed their ten playoff games without conceding a single goal, an exceptional performance that shows the defensive strength found in this selection.
The ticket for North America was officially secured on the final day with a clean win over Kenya (3-0). Several players have distinguished themselves during this campaign, notably Séko Fofana, the best Ivorian goalscorer with three goals. Franck Kessié, Simon Adingra, Yan Diomandé, Evann Guessand, Ibrahim Sangaré and Sébastien Haller also contributed to this mastered qualification.
The return of an African powerhouse
Long considered one of the most talented selections on the continent, Côte d'Ivoire has nevertheless experienced a long absence on the world stage. After three consecutive participations between 2006 and 2014, the Elephants had missed the 2018 and 2022 editions. However, the continental crown obtained during the 2023 AFCON marked the return to the forefront of Ivorian football. In an incredible scenario, the Elephants had passed very close to elimination in the first round before reversing their fate to win a third continental title.
This victory has restored confidence to a whole generation who now approach the World Cup with great ambitions. Qualification for the last 16, a goal never achieved before, is now more than ever within reach.
Emerse Faé, the man of the Ivorian miracle

Few coaches can claim to have had such a spectacular start at the head of a national team. Appointed interim coach in the middle of CAN 2023 after the departure of Jean-Louis Gasset, Emerse Faé immediately changed the fate of the Elephants. A few weeks later, he lifted the continental trophy in front of a crowd. Since then, the former midfielder of FC Nantes, Reading and OGC Nice has confirmed that he is not just a transition coach.
Under his leadership, Côte d'Ivoire has regained a clear identity, a rigorous tactical discipline and collective confidence that allowed them to dominate the qualifications at the World Cup. At only 41 years old, Faé is now preparing to live his first World Cup as a coach with the ambition to continue writing history.

Three players to watch
1. Yan Diomandé (RB Leipzig)

The new sensation of Ivorian football. Revealed this season in the Bundesliga, the 19-year-old winger has emerged as one of the main offensive assets of the Elephants. Author of an exceptional season in the colors of RB Leipzig, he combines speed, percussion and efficiency in the last gesture. For his first World Cup, he could become one of the revelations of the tournament.
2. Franck Kessié (Al-Ahli)
The real boss of the Ivorian locker room. Having played for AC Milan and FC Barcelona, the midfielder brings valuable experience to this selection. Respected by the whole group, he embodies the leadership and mindset that characterize the Elephants since the continental coronation. In major events, his influence extends far beyond the field.
3. Christ Inao Oulaï (Trabzonspor)
Considered one of the greatest hopes in Ivorian football, the midfield brings freshness and dynamism to the midfield. Its ability to collect balloons, break lines and accompany offensives makes it a particularly valuable profile. Alongside Kessié, Sangaré and Séko Fofana, it could quickly become one of the revelations of the tournament.
The group and opponents at the 2026 World Cup (Group E)
Côte d'Ivoire inherits an affordable but tricky group. The Elephants will start their campaign against Ecuador before a much anticipated clash against Germany, the group’s favorite. They will then conclude the group stage against Curaçao. On paper, Germany is one step ahead. Behind, Côte d'Ivoire seems to possess the necessary arguments to win one of the qualifying places. But Africans must avoid overconfidence in Ecuador and Curaçao.
With a balanced squad, a successful coach and the status of champion of Africa, the Elephants have perhaps their best opportunity to finally cross the first round of a World Cup.
